Learning a new skill can be the biggest pain on earth!

 

I try to keep up with changes in technology, internet marketing and business opportunities but it can be real hard work. The part that I find the hardest is trying to separate between the things that I really need to know for my business and the ones that every Tom, Dick and Harry tells me I should have that really don't help with my income.

 

I have never been a huge outsourcer, I love hard work and the idea of paying someone else to do it for me fills me with dread. The worst part is that I feel if I can do it myself what would be the point in going down the outsourcing route. My Grandfather who has recently turned eighty and has terrible back problems still does his own decorating even though he is on a very healthy pension and could very easily afford to pay someone else to do it for him.

 

It is the exact same with Internet Marketing. I have had to force myself to pay someone else $50 to install a new theme on my Blog that I could have done myself. The only difference is that it would have taken me two days to sort it out as I am not that great with technology. My Virtual Assistant though will have done it all in less than an hour.

 

It's the same with internet marketing, sometimes it is much better to learn it yourself as you can save yourself hundreds of dollars in the process. I have lost count now of the different things that I have learnt in this business that have been necessary in order for me to maximise the profits.

 

This has included....

 

*How to use Filezilla to upload my websites onto Hostgator - before I was paying out a fortune on site builder products because I was too scared to learn how to do it myself.

 

*How to use Hostgator to create a hosted Blog - Before I had a free Blog and risked it being closed down at a moments notice because I was too scared to do it myself.

 

*How to use Aweber for my autoresponder - This I found very difficult as I really didn't understand the very basic tasks.

 

So from saving myself two days worth of boring technical work that I hate doing I could have very easily have set myself up a couple of income streams that would have netted me over $1,000 over the coming month. I would have swapped something that I hate doing for something that I adore and it would make great economic sense too.

 

I really don't mind using the skills that I have learnt as they are very quick jobs and aren't in the slightest bit time consuming. I love uploading my files now but if I couldn't get the hang of it I would have paid someone else to do it for me as it would make so much more sense.

 

However there are many things that I would never even consider outsourcing. This is because I believe I can do a much better job myself and by the time I have explained to someone exactly what I want them to do I could have done the job myself. Those that are better than me don't sell there services because they are too busy making money themselves.

 

The kind of things that I won't outsource include....

 

*Writing sales pages

*Blog Posts

*Writing Ezines

*Creating products

 

Over the last few years I have collected a great database of people that I use for all kinds of different outsourcing. That way if I need something doing I can quickly email them without the need for any messing about. By doing it this way I am returning to people as a satisfied customer and it is very rare that they will let me down. I also have a great list if my customers are after something doing, I can recommend someone for them.

 

It is always a good idea to go by recommendations, the internet is full of people that will pull a fast one and let you down but the majority of us are honest.

 

I have been involved with a sporting niche for a long time and those that are involved in it seem to have an awful amount of money to splash about which makes it the total opposite of the make money online niche.

 

It was when I was thinking about this niche that I had an idea and my brain went into overload. I put a website together offering them design services for their products as they all had very little technical experience and this was going to be a great money earner. It was an e-book showing them how to set up a website without the use of a site builder and it developed into lots of lovely sales that headed straight in the direction of my PayPal account.

 

Then I realised I had gone in the completely wrong direction with this one and I could actually make a lot more money out of it than I was. Many people in this niche use it as a hobby along side a full time job and don't have the time to put a website together so I moved on with my new plan.

 

I set up a website offering to provide them with a service that would build their website, enter all the content and upload it onto the internet. I then contacted my list and arranged a rather lucrative deal with them. I would take a 20% cut of the new sales that they had through me and for introducing them I would take a healthy cut. Best of all to make this sum all I had to do was email them and arrange a fee for my clients and then the money was mine on completion of the job.

 

I then contacted one of my freelancers and informed him that if he would do me a few bits and pieces to my websites for free I would sort him out with regular work. I never over did it by getting him to do too much, just the equivalent of about an hours work and as a result we now have a great friendship and lots of profit from the venture.

 

I am not a very big fan of the middle man idea but when I see the opportunity arise I really don't want it to pass me by. At the same time I received some free tweaking to my websites without it costing me anything, which was an amazing result.

 

You have to remember that if an opportunity comes your way that you should act on it or you will regret it later on.

 

I have never turned down a good opportunity, I remember twenty years ago when I was just seven years old I was giving my dad a good run for his money. He had a very successful video shop at the time but could not make anything out of renting the children's videos. So I picked up a little notebook and rented out the kids videos to my friends in the playground. I then split the money 50/50 with my Dad and I earned an absolute fortune and continued with it right through to leaving school.

 

This was in fact my very first joint venture and I loved every moment of it. I honestly believe that if I hadn't done it when I did I would never have ended up creating income streams the way I do today.

Report Proves Media Buyers Are Lazy

A ComScore report claims that 31 percent of all display advertisements are never seen by anyone, and that 72 percent of all display advertisements are shown on a site or in content other than where it was intended. In other words, most brand media buyers haven't the foggiest clue where their advertisements are being placed. This confirms my claim six months ago that brand media buyers are lazy.

I'm not going to rehash what I previously wrote, because frankly, most media buyers never read the first column because, well…they are lazy. However, I'd like to bring up some separate points about the study that make me wonder about what the industry in general is paying attention to. For all the articles about fraud and quality control, it seems that a large part of display advertising is still showing up on complete and utter crap.

If you are one of the few media buyers who pays attention, here are a few things to think about:

  1. Fraud is still extensive in the industry. As I pointed out in my column "You Are Stupid if You Continue to Ignore Advertising Fraud," the industry still has fraud written all over it. Network after network continues to have "issues" with where their advertisements are placed, but the bad guys keep on showing up in reports.
  2. Advertising exchanges in general stink. Take this from someone who was a consultant helping to build two advertising exchanges (DoubleClick and Right Media). There is only so much inventory to go around, so most exchanges are just reselling crap from other exchanges and networks. We know this to be true, but agencies still try to buy on exchanges over and over again.
  3. Most advertising networks are junk. Look at comScore's top networks and then ignore everyone else. I'm not saying that there aren't some great niche networks, or new companies popping up. However, Right Media has dozens of networks as part of its exchange and every day a new network shows up trying to peddle inventory. If you are buying on any network that claims to have 1 trillion ad impressions but isn't on comScore, you need to wake up and stop being so damn lazy.
  4. Learn about metrics you can count. Seriously, all those tools are useless unless you can see an actual result. I understand branding, but there is always an opportunity to collect information from some of your users. Have a backend ROI that actually knows that these users will sometimes convert. If you are sending 100,000 users to your brand car site, find out if they are actually interested in buying a car, or just thought the advertisement was "really flashy."
